Trade Group Urges Long-Term Care Planning Discussions

More than three-quarters of adults ages 65 and older say they've talked with their children about their wills according to a study just released by the Pew Research Center. Two-thirds say they've talked about what to do if they can no longer make their own medical decisions, the study found. "One of the subjects aging parents still fail to discuss with their adult children is long-term care," explains Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the national industry trade organization. "Failure to do so costs families lost money and increased stress." The Pew study reflected that it is the parent who generally initiates conversations regarding wills and health care instructions. Some 70 percent of older adults reported this to be the case

Study Examines Long-Term Care Insurance Claims

Some 180,000 individuals received benefits from their long-term care insurance protection according to a report issued by the American Association for Long-Term care Insurance, the industry trade group. "This is the first generation of Americans who are living into their eighties, nineties or even longer," states Jesse Slome, the organization's executive director. "It is also the first generation for whom long-term care insurance has really been available to pay for needed and costly care." The report examined claims for individuals who purchased coverage on an individual basis as compared to those who purchased through their employer. "An increasing number of large and small employers are offering employees long-term care insurance," Slome notes. Most employer-offered plans are voluntary with the employee benefiting from a group-purchasing discount

Consumers Significantly Over-Estimate Cost Of Long-Term Care Insurance

A new report reveals that American consumers perceive costs for long-term care insurance are more than twice the actual cost of protection. The report from the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the industry trade organization highlights the most commonly held misperceptions about long-term care insurance. According to the report, consumers also associate long-term care primarily with nursing home care. The prevailing misperception however is cost.

Working Staves Off Alzheimer's And Long-Term Care Needs A British study has concluded that working beyond normal retirement age appears to keep dementia and the need for costly long-term care at bay. Researchers examined medical records of men whose Alzheimer's symptoms emerged around age 75. They found that all other factors being equal, the symptoms were delayed about seven weeks for each extra year the men worked.
